On 21st November 2025, Egerton University marked a significant milestone by hosting its Inaugural Innovation Challenge, an event dedicated to fostering creativity, problem-solving, and transformative thinking among emerging innovators. The challenge brought together students, mentors, researchers, and stakeholders committed to exploring new solutions that address real-world problems across agriculture, food systems, sustainability, and community development.

A key highlight of the event was the active participation of REFOOTURE MSc students, who showcased a diverse range of innovative ideas rooted in regenerative and inclusive food system approaches. Their projects demonstrated not only academic excellence but also a deep understanding of the practical challenges faced by communities and ecosystems today. From value-addition concepts and climate-smart technologies to digital innovations and community-centered solutions, the students’ contributions captured the spirit of forward-thinking transformation that the competition aimed to promote.
The Nakuru Living Lab was proud to be one of the official sponsors of this milestone initiative. As part of its mandate to nurture a vibrant innovation ecosystem, the Living Lab remains committed to empowering youth, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration, and bridging the gap between research and real-world application. By sponsoring this event, the Lab reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening partnerships that accelerate sustainable development and inspire the next generation of leaders in food systems innovation.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in pitching sessions, panel discussions, peer learning, and interactive showcases. Judges drawn from academia, industry, and development partners provided insightful feedback, encouraging students to refine their ideas for scalability and long-term impact. The event concluded with recognition of outstanding innovations, celebrating creativity, scientific rigor, and the potential for positive societal change.

The success of this inaugural challenge sets a strong foundation for future editions, positioning Egerton University as a hub for innovation-driven learning and collaboration. It also reinforces the importance of providing platforms where youth can transform knowledge into actionable solutions that contribute to resilient livelihoods, sustainable food systems, and community empowerment.
