Empowering Menengai Farmers through Vertical Garden Technology for a Regenerative and Inclusive Food System

In a significant step toward promoting climate-smart agriculture, vegetable farmers in Menengai recently benefitted from a practical training on Vertical Garden Technology, facilitated by agricultural innovation experts from Griincom. This training aimed to equip local farmers with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to implement sustainable, space-efficient farming methods within their homesteads and small plots.

The session introduced farmers to vertical gardening—a technique that maximizes limited space by growing crops vertically—and demonstrated how to construct the garden structures using affordable, locally available materials. Participants also received guidance on integrating drip irrigation systems, which conserve water while maintaining optimal crop growth.

This activity directly supports the goals of Regenerative and Inclusive Food Systems (RIFS) by:

  • Promoting environmental sustainability through reduced land degradation and improved water use efficiency.
  • Enhancing household food and nutrition security by enabling year-round access to fresh, diverse vegetables.
  • Empowering marginalized groups, including women and youth, by introducing accessible, low-cost farming innovations.
  • Building livelihood resilience through income diversification from surplus produce.
  • Fostering community knowledge-sharing and innovation among smallholder farmers.

The training received positive feedback from the participants, many of whom expressed eagerness to implement vertical gardening on their farms. As more farmers adopt this technology, the community moves closer to a food system that is not only productive but also sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.

This initiative is a clear demonstration of how practical solutions and inclusive capacity building can help regenerate local food systems while improving the well-being of farming communities.
